GEOD provides several commands to deform layers, compartments, or previously constructed geometries. These commands are useful for modifying the initial shape of an object in order to simulate flattening, shearing, fault-related offsets, angular bends, or folding.
In practice, deformation commands make it possible to transform an existing geometry without redefining all points manually. They are therefore especially useful when building structural sketches, balanced interpretations, or simplified geological cross-sections.
The flatten command is used to flatten a geometry. It may be applied to restore or approximate a horizontal reference configuration, or more generally to reduce relief and irregularities in the shape of layers or compartments.
This type of operation is useful when one wants to compare a deformed structure with a simplified undeformed state, or when one needs to regularize the geometry before applying other transformations.
The shear command applies a shear deformation to an object. In geological terms, this corresponds to a deformation in which different parts of the geometry are displaced parallel to a given direction, producing an oblique distortion of the initial shape.
This command is useful for representing simple shear, drag effects, or progressive lateral displacement affecting layers and compartments.
The step command introduces a step-like displacement in a geometry. It may be used to create an abrupt offset between two parts of a layer or compartment.
Such a transformation is useful for representing discontinuous deformation, block offsets, or simplified fault-related displacements in a schematic cross-section.
The kink command is used to create an angular bend in a geometry. Instead of producing a smooth curvature, it generates a localized change in direction, similar to a hinge with straight limbs on either side.
This command is especially appropriate for representing kink-like structures, angular flexures, or simplified fold geometries with sharp inflection zones.
The fold command applies a folding deformation to an object. It is intended to transform initially simple geometries into curved structures resembling geological folds.
This command may be used to model the bending of layers, the development of anticline- or syncline-like shapes, or more generally any smooth waviness affecting a geological structure.
